“The mission of an artist is not only to create, but to discover.” – Paul Chiang Muses in Greek mythology are the sources of inspiration for literature, science, and the arts. Invisible describes the materials or techniques that are outside of mainstream, considered unrelated to art; they are the cross-disciplinary collaborations, the unfinished, imperfect, and discarded. Most of these invisible muses come from the creators’ own experiences and discovery in life. The exhibition is a collaboration between artist Paul Chiang, architect Yu Han Michael Lin, and fashion designer Justin Chou. From pick up to discovery, they pursue the unknown with their invisible muses. Beauty is redefined with unconventional materials seen through different angles. Discarded steel and black exposed concrete form boards were Chiang’s muses. For Lin, reconstructed wave boards and abandoned scaffolding created a unique spatial experience. For Chou, the snags of Jacquard were the best interpretation for the flow of light. Era and social issues alter the perception of beauty. Invisible beauty is a reflection of the past and present. The key visual of the exhibition is Paul Chiang’s Perish II, a large piece of artwork made by metal corrugated panels which were once the walls of his now demolished studio. The years of sun and rain exposure showed the trace of time and imprinted natural rust on iron. These unusual colours and texture were beauty Chiang had never seen before and irreplicable by man. He discovered that beauty overturned the established imagination of art and material. It expressed a new form of artistry which is a reflection of Chiang’s inner spirit.

Invisible Muse: Paul Chiang & Yu Han Michael Lin & Justin Chou Invisible Muse is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between artist Paul Chiang, architect Yu Han Michael Lin, and fashion designer Justin Chou. How did they depict translucent corrugated roofing sheets in their individual artistic expertise? In the process, no one could predict what the finishing works would be, yet in the end each piece emulated the spirit of Chiang’s art. Lin was inspired to create installation art that accentuates space and lighting while Chou produced inventive fashion pieces.

Jinzun : Paul Chiang The Jinzun series was made with abandoned black exposed concrete form boards, which were used to form concrete into structural shapes. The construction of the Paul Chiang Art Center left several abandoned black exposed concrete form boards. Paul Chiang regarded the soil stains remaining on the board as natural beauty and mixed pigments and sculptures with cement to give new life and value to the discarded black exposed concrete form board. /

Paul Chiang Art Center: Yu Han Michael Lin & Paul Chiang “My mission is to place the structure gracefully in the environment of Taitung, making the architecture an artistic sculpture.” – Yu Han Michael Lin Yu Han Michael Lin’s design of the Paul Chiang Art Center was inspired by Paul Chiang’s 13.5 ping sculpture. It blends into the vast landscape of Taitung like large sculptures immersed in nature. When Lin first saw 13.5 ping displayed in Chiang’s studio, he immediately started sketching the sculpture while considering architectural aspects of space in the natural environment of Taitung, the local weather, and the probability of replicating it into a life-size building. Lin’s goal was to create an architecture that would bring light to Chiang’s spirit. /

The Traveler: 2021 Taipei Fashion Week: Justin Chou & Paul Chiang “I learn to think through the artist’s eyes to present texture through the weaving of fabric. I also try to preserve the entire piece of fabric through minimal tailoring, and build layers to express Paul Chiang’s message.” – Justin Chou Justin Chou and Paul Chiang’s collaboration dubbed The Traveler series was inspired by Chiang’s creative career and a traveler who has lived in several cities. Chou reinterprets Chiang’s works through colour, texture, and takes inspiration from Chiang’s use of unconventional materials. His way of expressing Chiang’s creative energy was through a combination of skills from digital printing to Jacquard to make clothing into walking works of art. /

“The Mountain Ranges of Taiwan in The Traveler series was a challenging piece. I learned to control the tension of the yarn to express the piece to its full potential. At first, the textile mill was resistant. I believe in order to create new possibilities we must have an open mind." said Chou. Chou believes that imperfections make uniqueness. In translating the Mountain Ranges of Taiwan into fashion, he preferred the Jacquard technique, an unfavoured technique due to its tendency for snags, to create three-dimensional fine lines, and more importantly, the lighting of the mountains shown in Chiang’s painting.
