In the context of the climate crisis—driven by human overactivity and overproduction—what can artists contribute? A growing movement known as planetary art seeks to radically reimagine our relationship with nature.

The questions posed by planetary art extend beyond globalisation and intercultural exchange. They encompass the planet itself and our relationship, as humans, to the natural world. At its core, planetary art interrogates the notion of planetary interdependence.

This form of art takes the Earth not merely as an object of study, but as a principle of reflection. It strives to decenter the human perspective, giving voice to non-human entities. Traditional Chinese art theory offers valuable insights into this shift, as Chinese artists and scholars have long cultivated relationships with natural elements—trees, rocks, mountains, plants, clouds—that are profoundly decentered from human experience.

In this way, traditional Chinese artists, alongside contemporary artists from around the world, converge in their questioning of categories such as animal, mineral, and plant. Together, they gesture toward a new order of multi-species relationships.
